Conducive Climate
Recent studies have identified that over 60% of Malawi's land areas are classed as suitable or highly suitable for the crop. Malawi is fortunate to have expansive upland areas where the distribution of temperatures and rainfall provide ideal growing conditions. Lower altitude and drier areas are now becoming increasingly viable as new establishments install irrigation.
Shifting Agricultural Sector
Tobacco historically the principle export of Malawi is declining, this combined with availability of farm land has enabled the conversion of farms to macadamia. Malawi as a land locked country with challenging trade connections has always exported dried and high value commodities. This greatly limits the pool of options for viable agribusinesses in Malawi working against fresh products.
Land and population pressures are not uniform throughout the country and some of the best growing areas are located in areas which do not face these challenges.
An Established Industry
Macadamia to successfully produce and export is a skill intensive crop. The industry is well established with all elements of a viable export industry in place. Viable production systems have been developed to select the right varieties, manage pests. A network of service providers equip and support the development of the industry. Postharvest protocols are well established to manage and maintain crop quality.
A well regarded origin for Macadamia
Although origin is less of a determinant of final marketing of macadamia when compared to coffee or tea Malawi accesses some of the most demanding markets for the crop in the world. This reputation is closely guarded and there is a continued effort to promote and enhance the standing of the origin.
